  • Stretch and Booty to be friends reunited

    Jamie Murray

Jamie Murray will play the Aussie Open doubles event with former partner Eric Butorac.

British doubles No.1 Jamie Murray will hook up with former partner Eric Butorac at the 2009 Australian Open, the Scot has confirmed.

Stretch and Booty, as they were known, will play together at the opening slam of the season for the first time since the 2007 US Open.

The duo were one of the hottest partnerships on tour when they won four titles together in 2007 – Dallas, San Jose, Memphis and Nottingham.

The pair parted company after Flushing Meadows last year and since then Murray has struggled to gel with any one player for more than a handful of events. This year he has played with 12 different partners.

The 22-year-old left-hander will begin his season alongside Serb Dusan Vemic who at No.35 in the ATP doubles world rankings is listed seven places below Murray. They will team up in Brisbane and Sydney in January.

Jamie has spent the last six days competing at the BlackRock Tennis Masters alongside the likes of John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Sunday’s champion Cedric Pioline.

While Jamie winds up his season in London, brother Andy is well into his off-season in Miami where he is being battered into shape by Team Murray.

The 21-year-old world No.4 also found time to film a sequence for this week’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year show, whacking tennis balls into the ocean while a TV crew filmed the action from a helicopter.

  • Jamie’s Sampras dream comes true

    Jamie Murray

Jamie Murray’s dream of hitting with 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras came true at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday.

Growing up, Jamie Murray dreamed of trading groundstrokes with the great Pete Sampras. On Wednesday at the BlackRock Tennis Masters in London, his dream came true.

Needing a practice partner with a swinging, left-handed delivery ahead of his clash with John McEnroe, Sampras asked Murray, who is at the event playing in the doubles draw.

The pair laughed and joked together, and for Murray, it was a special experience.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Murray. “I don’t think I’ve ever concentrated as hard in my life on a tennis court but it’s got to be done against Pete.

“The first ball he fed in was about 120 mph. It was a lot of fun and he still hits the ball as sweet as a nut and he was caning it from the back of the court right the way through.

“But I enjoyed it and I never thought or expected that I’d get the chance to do it in my life.”

British doubles expert Jamie Murray is the latest name added to the line-up at this week’s BlackRock Masters Tennis at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

British doubles No.1 Jamie Murray has been invited to appear at this week’s BlackRock Masters Tennis at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The world No.28, who shot to fame at Wimbledon in 2007 when he won the mixed doubles title with Jelena Jankovic, will play three doubles matches at the six-day event.

The 22-year-old brother of world No.4 Andy will play alongside and against legends Henri Leconte, Mansour Bahrami, Peter Fleming, Mark Woodforde and Anders Jarryd.

“I’m thrilled to have been asked to play,” said Murray. “It is an incredible venue and a real treat to be given the chance to play alongside some of the great legends of the game.”

The young Scot was recently spotted by the Tennishead team busily preparing for his last tournament of the year. Our eagle-eyed Publisher clocked Murray buying his groceries in the Wimbledon branch of Sainsbury’s.

The event, which runs from Tuesday December 2 to Sunday December 9, features Pete Sampras, Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, Greg Rusedski, Pat Cash, Guy Forget, Cedric Pioline and Jeremy Bates in the singles draw.

  • No pain, no gain for committed Murray

    Andy Murray

World No.4 Andy Murray leaves for a training block in Florida this week ready for a month of blood, sweat and, er, sushi…

Britain’s Andy Murray has told the media in the UK about how he hopes to achieve world domination on a diet of sushi and protein shakes.

The world No.4, who reached his first grand slam title at Flushing Meadows during 2008, leaves for his off-season training block in Florida on Wednesday.

‘If I can put on weight, it will give me more power in my shots’ – Murray

The 21-year-old Scot will spend the run-up to Christmas putting in the hard yards with his group of expert advisers, Team Murray, as they plan even greater success on the ATP Tour in 2009.

One of those advisers, Tennishead Fitness Editor Jez Green, will be tasked with making Murray an even fitter, stronger and heavier player before the 2009 season begins.

“I don’t think that there is anything huge in my game that needs to be improved,” said Murray, who aims to add eight or nine pounds over the next few weeks.

“I just need to make sure that physically I’m even stronger than this year.

“At the US Open I was a bit tired in the final so I just want to make sure that my recovery after a long match is a bit better.

“My game is there, it is just doing it consistently for the whole of a slam.

“The US Open was the first time I really did that for five or six matches in a row and I need to try and go one better next year.”

Murray says there’ll be plenty of low-fat, high protein foods on the menu as well as some punishing sessions in the gym and on the track.

“I’m going to have to eat loads to try and put on weight if I’m training four or five hours a day, so I’ll eat a lot of sushi,” said Murray.

“I’ve always eaten pretty well but I’ve never really had a nutritional programme before. If I can put on weight, it will give me more power in my shots.

“I’ll do similar stuff that I did last year but obviously my base will be a lot better than it was, so I’ll be able to run a little bit faster and lift heavier weights,” he added.

“I’ll just try to work harder than I did last year, which is going to be difficult. It’s really the running where you feel it, when you’re out of breath and you’re feeling sorry for yourself.

“You get the rewards when you’re on the court though because playing tennis matches feels so much easier afterwards. When you have that physical side right, mentally you are going to be better as well.

“My game is there. I just need to make sure that I’m stronger so that I’m ready.”

Tennis fans can raise money by buying behind-the-scenes photos taken by Murray and Keothavong.

British men’s and women’s No.1 tennis players Andy Murray and Anne Keothavong are both involved in a unique programme to help raise money for disadvantaged children around the world.

Back in the summer, the pair signed up for The Exposure Project, which is raising money for the international children’s charity Right to Play.

The Exposure Project brought ten celebrity sportsmen and women together to give fans an idea of what it’s like living their lives – they were each given digital cameras and told to take as many images as possible while they travelled the world.

The best shots are now on view at the Idea Generation Gallery in Shoreditch, east London, as well as on the Exposure Project website, where fans can buy them to help raise funds.

Among others on the project were British Olympic kayaker Tim Brabants, British international skier Chemmy Alcott, England rugby coach Ben Ryan and long-distance runner Liz Yelling.

Murray’s shots include a great image taken from his chair after winning a match at this year’s US Open and Keothavong’s include exclusive images from Flushing Meadows and the National Tennis Centre where she trains.

Right to Play is supported by over 40 international athletes from around the world who give their time to help attract exposure for the organisation’s programmes. It aims to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world.
