You can trust us to pick a winner at tennishead. Back in January (yes, as in five months ago) in the very first tennishead ezine we chose six young ‘uns who we thought would make an impact this year.
One of that six was Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea who on Monday reached her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final with an impressive victory over former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic.
The 19-year-old from Bucharest caught our attention during 2008 when she won the Tashkent Open and reached the semi-finals in Luxembourg. Those results helped her move 70 places up the women’s world rankings between January and December.
The former U14 world No.1 took a while to rediscover her best form during the first quarter of 2009 but once the clay court season arrived things started looking a bit brighter for the parrot-loving pro (fact).
Cirstea made the last four in Marbella and reached the last eight in Estoril before timing her latest charge to perfection with a run deep into the draw at Roland Garros.
She took out American Carly Gullikson in round one, 21st seed Alize Cornet in straights in her next match and 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki 7-6, 7-5 to make the fourth round without dropping a set.
On Monday she truly announced her arrival at the top of the women’s game by fighting her way past Jankovic 3-6, 6-0, 9-7 to go through to her first quarter-final at a major in only her second year of Grand Slam tennis.
We knew we could bank on her.

Sora played well in the tourney developing with the skills needed…But she needs more focus on the game rather than be angry at the opponent which is unnecessary..
