tennishead mag: Jan issue OUT NOW!

For all Novak Djokovic’s efforts in 2011 – 70 wins to just six losses and a mighty $12.6 million in prize money – it wasn’t the Serb who ended the year with a flourish but past (and seemingly back to present) master Roger Federer.

The Swiss compiled a 17-match winning streak in his last three tournaments of the 2011 season to secure titles in Basel, Paris and London, not to mention a prestigious spot on the cover of the latest issue of our lovely magazine.

Inside the January issue, tennishead editor Lee Goodall takes a look at how Federer managed his schedule to perfection to bring the curtain down on 2011 in style, and what the 16-time Grand Slam champion’s end-of-season form means for his hopes of greater glory going into an all-important Olympic year.

Victoria Azarenka is another who has staked her claim for a big year in 2012. The Belarusian has enjoyed the most successful season of her career over the past 12 months and the self-confessed perfectionist is still working towards becoming “the player I want to be.” The 22-year-old had contemplated quitting at the start of the year after temporarily losing her desire for the game, but those thoughts were soon banished with the help of her Mother and Grandmother and Richard Eaton takes a look at her swift journey back from the brink of despair to a career-high No.3 spot in the WTA ladder.

Elsewhere, we deliver our guide to the 12 things to look forward to in 2012, find out what the tour’s finest are getting up to in the off season, speak to Agnieszka Radwanska and Florian Mayer, and take a look at life on the Challenger Tour, where Dustin Brown, the German-born Jamaican, tells us about how he used to travel around the lower tier tournaments in a campervan bought for him by his parents.

There’s plenty more to digest before you turn your thoughts to the Christmas turkey. There’s a feature on Radek Stepanek’s funky-looking ten-sided Bosworth racket, a preview of the groundbreaking new EA Sports video game Grand Slam Tennis 2, travel reviews on Wickwoods resort on UK shores in West Sussex and the beauty of Perth as a setting for the Hopman Cup and we also take a look at two UK academies.

As if that’s not enough, we’ve included an extensive preview of the 2012 Australian Open and there’s the ever-useful academy and comprehensive results sections.
