Review: Mario Tennis Open, out today!

It’s not too often we get giddy about gear news at tennishead towers but when this little gem landed on our doorstep it proved impossible to suppress our inner child.

Launched today, Mario Tennis Open for Nintendo 3DS allows you to experience tennis like you’ve never seen it before. The mainstay of any Mario game is, well, Mario but the podgy Italian plumber is joined by a cast of colourful characters from Diddy Kong and Bowser to his less powerful but more accurate brother, Luigi.

Gamers can choose from no fewer than seven court surfaces. The usual suspects clay, grass and hard are included but players can also compete on carpet, stone, wood, snow and sand in a variety of tennis stadiums. Mario Stadium is the game’s hallowed turf and revered by players everywhere, although our personal favourite is the understated Mushroom Valley – a court built on a giant mushroom, of course.

Tennis enthusiasts can take advantage of their expert knowledge of the game because Mario Tennis Open isn’t just a case of hitting the ball back and forth – players can hit a variety of shots including slice and topspin. You can challenge your friends if you’re in the same room using local wireless or you can take on the world via the web.

Happy gaming!

Mario Tennis Open for Nintendo 3DS is released today (in Europe). The game has an RRP of £39.99
