Petrova claims Quebec crown


Russian world No.11 Nadia Petrova outlasted American Beth Mattek to claim her second WTA singles title of 2008 in Quebec City, Canada, on Sunday.

Petrova added the Bell Challenge trophy to her cabinet with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Mattek, who was playing the first tour final of her career after being sidelined since the US Open.

Therell be little time to celebrate for Petrova though as she will travel straight to Doha where she is second reserve for this weeks WTA Championships.

“It was really wonderful to win this event, Petrova said. To finish off the season like this is wonderful.

Now I have a long journey ahead of me to Doha, but it’ll definitely be worth it. And then it’ll be really nice to put the rackets aside for a few weeks!”

Mattek, who is on the road to recovery from a hip injury, said despite the defeat it had been a successful return to the tour.

“I didn’t play for a month after the US Open because I hurt my hip there, and I was playing outdoors in Arizona ever since then,” the 23-year-old said.

“So I was trying to get more and more comfortable with each match here in Quebec City.

I had a great week this week. It was my first time here, and now I can tell why it’s one of the players’ favourite tournaments.”

The doubles trophy went to German Anna-Lena Groenefeld and American Vania King who beat Jill Craybas from the US and Thailands Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-6, 6-4.
