The world No.1 stormed back from a set and a break down, winning 10 successive games to secure a 4-6 6-3 6-0 victory at Crandon Park.

In a match-up between the top two players in the world, Sharapova looked set to end a ten-match losing streak against the American, but Williams roared back to consign the Russian to a fifth defeat in as many finals at Key Biscayne.

"It's tough to lose in the final stage because you've worked so hard to get there,” said Sharapova, who won in Indian Wells a fortnight ago. “But it's a really nice stage to be at. It's a nice opportunity that you're giving yourself. The more I give myself this opportunity, the better chance that I have of winning. That's what I have to think about coming out of this."

Williams is only the fourth woman in the modern era to win the same event six times after Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Chris Evert.

"Maria definitely pushed me – she did a really great job today," she said. "Like she said, I look forward to our next matches – it's going to be really fun for the fans and for us and for everyone."
