Murray, who said earlier this week he believes he is on the verge of his most successful season on the red dirt, was clinical as he wrapped up a 6-1 6-4 victory, dropping just three points on his first serve as he eased past the French world No.81 in 72 minutes.

Murray will face Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round, with a potential quarter-final against another Frenchman in the shape of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Eight-time defending champion Rafael Nadal powered past Marinko Matosevic 6-1 6-2, while top seed Novak Djokovic was forced to rally from a set down to defeat Mikhail Youzhny 4-6 6-1 6-4.

Meanwhile, there were also routine wins for Tomas Berdych, Juan Monaco and Marin Cilic. However there was a surprise victory for Jurgen Melzer as the Austrian defeated No.10 seed Nicolas Almagro 6-4 6-2, while Milos Raonic was edged out 6-3 1-6 7-6(3) by Jarkko Nieminen.
