The world No.1 claimed a 6-2 7-6(1) victory to end Nadal's 46-match winning streak at the Monte-Carlo Country Club stretching back to 2005.

The Serb, who struggled with an ankle injury in the early rounds, showed no signs of injury as he powered to a 5-0 lead, winning 80 per cent of points on his opponent's second serve as he wrapped up the opening set.

Nadal rallied to take an early lead in the second set, but Djokovic hit back and survived a late break by Nadal to clinch victory in the tiebreak after an hour and 52 minutes on court.

"I did not know if I was going to be a part of the tournament this year. I made a decision to play and, right now, it's the best decision of my life," Djokovic said. "I cannot ask for a better start to my clay season."
