Evans, who upset Kei Nishikori and Bernard Tomic after coming through three qualifying matches, bowed out with a 7-6(6) 6-1 4-6 7-5 defeat at Flushing Meadows.

The 23-year-old had two set points in the fourth set and the opportunity to force a decider, but Robredo, who was struggling with a leg injury, dug deep to book his place in the second week.

The Spaniard’s reward is a meeting with 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who cruised past Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-0 6-2. Federer, who raced through the match in an hour and 21 minutes, has beaten Robredo in all 10 of their previous encounters.

The Swiss remains on course for a quarter-final showdown with world No.2 Rafael Nadal, who powered into the fourth round with a 6-4 6-3 6-3 victory over Ivan Dodig.

Home favourite John Isner’s US Open came to an end with a 6-4 3-6 7-5 7-6(5) defeat to Philipp Kohlschreiber, while fourth seed David Ferrer reached the last 16 with a 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4 win over Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin.
