The Serb struggled with a sore wrist throughout the recent Monte Carlo Masters and said after his semi-final defeat to Roger Federer that he cannot play again for ‘some time’.

However, he is now optimistic that he will be recovered in time to compete in the Mutua Madrid Open, which starts on May 4.

“Fortunately, the situation with the injury is better than it first seemed,” said the 26-year-old on a statement on his official website. “Doctors assured me that I will be ready for Madrid, then Rome and Roland Garros, just as it has been planned.

“However, I need to continue with the recovery process and full medical treatments. It means I will have to take a short break in order to recover as soon as possible.”

Djokovic was bidding to win his fifth successive Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo following victories in Shanghai, Paris, Indian Wells and Miami.

But after a gruelling quarter-final clash with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez he was beaten 7-5 6-2 by Federer in the last four.

The Serb will be hoping to get back to winning ways before the French Open, the only Grand Slam he is yet to win, gets underway on May 25.
