Match of the day: Andy Murray v Matthias Bachinger

After his cramping scare against Robin Haase in the first round, Murray has been granted almost 80 hours of recovery time by the schedulers in the referee’s office. The cooler conditions of the night session won’t do him any harm either, especially given the cramping problems suffered by Ivan Dodig and Steve Johnson on Wednesday.

World No.235 Bachinger came through qualifying without dropping a set and promptly rattled through three more to shock Radek Stepanek in the first round. Perhaps unsurprisingly, has never met Murray in the pro ranks, but the 27-year-olds met regularly in the juniors, Murray giving up just one result to the German.

Still, with nothing to lose, a fine run of form coming in, and Murray’s health to be tested once more, this may not be the cakewalk that it looks on paper.

Look out for: Madison Keys

Keys claimed her first three games at the US Open in five minutes in her opening match against Jarmila Gajdosova, her first set in 18 minutes, and wrapped up a 6-0 6-3 victory in 45 minutes with 23 winners to her name.

With Sloane Stephens crashing out on Wednesday, all eyes will be on the No.27 seed to share the spotlight with fellow Americans Serena Williams and CiCi Bellis – also back in action on Thursday – when she faces Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic for a potential third-round showdown with Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

"I definitely think there's a big group of women and men right now that are slowly doing better and better, making a name for US tennis more and more," Keys said after her first-round win. "I'm really happy and honoured to be one of the people that's part of the big group."
