The world No.5 has 3870 points to defend on the red clay in Europe, considerably fewer points than he has defended in previous years.

An eight-time champion in Monte Carlo, Nadal begins his European spring campaign in the principality, where he fell in the quarter-finals last year. He will then play at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona before travelling to Madrid and Rome for the Masters 1000 tournaments ahead of the second Grand Slam of the season in Paris.

“It is the most important part of the season for me,” Nadal told CNN's Open Court. “Playing Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros are all tournaments that I have been playing great for the last years. I enjoy being in the cities, at the tournaments, it always brings me positive feelings, positive memories. We’ll see this year if I am able to play well again.”

Nadal is bidding to win a tenth title at Roland Garros, where he has lost just one match in 10 years.
