Williams chasing the Serena Slam

"Until this year’s French Open the thinking before almost any Grand Slam tournament was simple: if Serena Williams is healthy she will be the clear favourite.

Post-Roland Garros that needs a little modifying: Serena Williams will be the favourite so long as she is well enough just to get out of bed in the morning. Williams was already most observers’ pick for Wimbledon before she took on both her opponents and a nasty bout of flu to claim her third French Open title."

So writes Paul Newman, tennis correspondent of The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, and i in the latest issue of tennishead. As Williams bids to win a sixth Wimbledon title, it would be her 21st Grand Slam title, just one behind Steffi Graf's Open era record and three behind Margaret Court's all-time record of 24. She would also be in possession of all four majors for the second time in her career, so called the 'Serena Slam'.

Former major champions Martina Navratilova and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario give their thoughts on who might be able to stop Williams at Wimbledon, and whether the American can become the first player since Graf in 1988 to achieve a pure calendar Grand Slam.
