Federer undergoes knee surgery

Federer returned home to Switzerland to have arthroscopic surgery after sustaining the knee injury the day after his semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

Federer will miss the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam and the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as he recovers from the surgery.

It remains to be seen whether he will be fit in time for the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year in Indian Wells. The BNP Paribas Open in California begins on March 10.

“I am so disappointed to have to miss Rotterdam and Dubai as they are two of my favorite tournaments on the ATP World Tour,” Federer said in a statement. “While this is an unfortunate setback, I feel grateful that up until now I have remained mostly healthy throughout my career.

“My doctors have ensured me that the surgery was a success and with proper rehabilitation, I will be able to return to the Tour soon.”
