Murray keen to maintain momentum

Murray sailed into the third round with a dominant 6-3 6-2 6-1 victory against Lu on Centre Court to set up a third-round meeting with Australian John Millman.

The Scot was broken in the first game of the  match, but won seven games in a row to wrap up the opening set and grab an early break in the second.

Murray, who has not dropped a set in his opening two matches (a far cry from Roland Garros where he had already played 10 sets at the same stage of the tournament), got better as the match progressed. In the third set he lost just four points on his serve and 12 points overall.

“I was happy that I improved as the match went on,” Murray said. “Hopefully I start the next match like I finished this one. Keep it going.”

Lu had been in impressive form, winning Challenger titles on the grass at Surbiton and Ilkley and was 15-1 on the grass heading into the match, but after a promising start was unable to match the 2013 champion.

“I played well from the beginning but he is the No.2 player and one of the best players right now,” said Lu. “I didn’t think I played badly but he was always one or two shots better than me.”

“The first set was a tough set, both of us had a bunch of chances, a lot of deuce games,” said Murray. “Once I got that early break in the second I started to settle down and play better tennis. The second and third sets I played well. I finished the match really well.”

Murray, who will now face Australian John Millman in the third round, is happy to make a good start to the Championships, and to improve on his first-round performance.

“I’ve started well here quite a few times over the years,” he said. “I don’t know if this is the best one or not. But today was a good match, an improvement from the first round, against a guy who has won a lot of matches on the grass recently.”
