Federer to miss rest of 2016

Federer has called time on his 2016 season to focus on “extensive rehabilitation” following knee surgery in February.

Federer returned to the tour in April, but skipped the French Open with a back injury and reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

However, he announced on Tuesday that he will not play in the Rio 2016 Olympics, nor will he defend his titles in Cincinnati or Basel. It will be the first time since 2001 that he will not appear at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals.

“Considering all options after consulting with my doctors and my team, I have made the very difficult decision to call an end to my 2016 season as I need more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year,” Federer announced on his Facebook page.

“The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover.

“I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017.”
