Murray in the form of his life

Marin Cilic’s 6-4 7-5 victory in the Western & Southern Open final was he first defeat for Murray since Roland Garros, having won titles at Queen’s, Wimbledon and Olympic gold at Rio 2016 since his defeat to Novak Djokovic in the French Open final.

Murray has reached seven consecutive finals – stretching back to the Mutua Madrid Open in early May – and is 50-7 for the season.

“I think I’m playing my best tennis just now. It’s not even close to anything else I had done before,” said Murray who will be bidding to win a fourth Grand Slam title at the US Open. “Seven finals in a row, winning Wimbledon again, and the Olympics. It’s been really good.”

After defending his Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, Murray travelled straight to Mason, Ohio to play the Masters 1000 event, where he beat Kevin Anderson, Bernard Tomic and Milos Raonic en route to the final before falling in straight sets to 2014 US Open champion Cilic.

“I’m very proud of this week. Obviously today didn’t go the way I would’ve wanted, but I certainly didn’t expect to get to the final,” said Murray, who had problems with his shoulder after his first match. “It was a very positive week. Now I’m looking forward to a few days’ rest.”

“After the first match I played, I was having problems with my shoulder. I did speak about it with my team, but my physio was pretty confident that it was just fatigue, and that I didn’t have any sort of structural damage in my shoulder.

“When it was said that I wasn’t going to make it worse by playing, I thought: ‘Let’s go for it this week. Let’s try and get through as many matches as we can.’”
