Australian Open fast facts


The tournament was twice staged in New Zealand. Back in 1906, when it was still known as the Australasian Championships, the event was held on the grass courts at Hagley Park in Christchurch.

The event, which started on Boxing Day and ran through to New Year’s Eve, was won by home favourite Tony Wilding, who beat fellow New Zealander Francis Fisher 6-0 6-4 6-4 in the final.

Six years later it was staged in Hastings, where Irishman James Cecil Parke beat Englishman Alfred Beamish in the first final to feature two foreigners.
