Querrey won the biggest title of his career at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel after beating four Top 20 opponents to become the first American champion in the tournament’s history.

"It's definitely a tournament that I'm going to remember for the rest of my life," said Querrey, who also beat David Goffin, Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios en route to his ninth ATP title. "It's just one of those weeks where I got in the zone and everything was working for me. I hope I can have more like this."

A champion at the event in 2005 and 2013, Nadal saw his perfect 14-0 record at the ATP World Tour 500 event come to an end with a 6-3 7-6(3) defeat to Querrey.

"He played very well, almost reaching perfection," said the Spaniard, who had been looking to win his first hardcourt title since Doha in January 2014.

"I played under a lot of pressure because of his serve and baseline game. He left me with very few options, and the few I had he also played good. I have to congratulate him. I'm also very happy with my week and my game."
