Istomin upsets Gasquet
Denis Istomin secured his first main tour level win in eight weeks after a surprise 1-6 6-4 6-4 success over Richard Gasquet in the opening round of the Moselle Open in Metz
The 31-year-old had lost six of his seven previous encounters with his French opponent but he was clinical in the second and third sets as he took out the No.6 seed.
Gasquet, who bagged his first Challenger Tour title in seven years on Sunday, won 52% of the total points played however he paid the price for only converting three of thirteen break-point chances.
There was a better result for another home favourite in Metz. The unpredictable Benoit Paire was a 6-2 6-4 winner over Stefanos Tsitsipas in just 57 minutes.
Also through to the second round is Nikoloz Basilashvili, Peter Gojowczyk, Yannick Maden, Marcel Granollers and Nicolas Almagro.
At the ATP 250 event in St. Petersburg, qualifier, Liam Broady, won his first main tour level match this year after a resounding 6-3 6-0 triumph over Ernests Gublis.
Viktor Troicki defeated Andrey Kuznetsov 7-6(6) 7-6(2), Mikhail Youzhny overcame John-Patrick Smith 7-6(6) 6-4 and Ricardas Berankis battled back to take out Daniel Masur 3-6 6-3 6-2.
