It’s been a quiet start to the I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here adventure for Martina Navratilova but that doesn’t mean the first 24 hours hasn’t already featured some comedy moments.
The tennis superstar is one of ten celebrities fighting it out to win the reality TV show aired every night on British channel ITV1 over the next three weeks.
Sunday’s opening show featured footage of Martina entering the jungle and it wasn’t long before the multi-grand slam winning American was forced to confront one of her worst fears – heights – when she was made to parachute into camp.
The ten celebs were split into two teams of five and Martina joined forces with ex-EastEnder Joe Swash, TV presenter Dani Behr, former Star Trekker George Takei and British police chief Brian Paddick.
The first challenge was for the team to sky-dive into camp, but far from shying away from the prospect, the former world No.1 gritted her teeth and got stuck in.
Life in the jungle has been pretty comfortable for Martina and her team-mates so far as they won the right to set up camp on the ‘Home’ pitch, which has raised beds and a double-decker London bus for shelter.
Joe (who didn’t waste any time quizzing Martina about being a world famous lesbian tennis player) made sure his team bagged the best camp by surviving the very first Bush Tucker Trial of the series, Trauma Tank. It’s well worth a watch, if only to see him jump out of his skin every time the klaxon is sounded.
Martina’s squad also won the right to a proper evening meal so the Czech-born 52-year-old and her new best mates got stuck into bangers and mash (‘What’s a banger?’ she asked) and roast chicken, Dani Behr-style.
It’s been a fairly gentle introduction to jungle life for MN, but there’s a long way to go yet. Things can only get worse…
