Following a tremendous showing at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, we have been left with a tennis-ball sized hole in our hearts this week. In fact, the knowledge that the wooden court we gathered around so intently for eight blissful days is being ruthlessly ripped up – probably as we speak – is proving rather distressing.
But if you, like the rest of us, are struggling to deal with life in the absence of a world famous London based indoor tennis tournament, never fear, because the Aegon Masters is here from December 1-6 to soften the blow.
With Mark Phillippoussis and Pat Rafter set to join usual suspects including defending champion Cedric Pioline, Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg and the ever-entertaining Masour Bahrami, we are in for our second feast of tennis on British soil in as many weeks as past champions battle it out for victory at the Royal Albert Hall.
As if seeing a host of former Grand Slam winners, finalists and World No.1’s is not enough, the 2009 Aegon Masters pits Patrick Rafter against Goran Ivanisevic in an intriguing repeat of their enthralling 2001 Wimbledon final.
If you are not one of the lucky few planning to be present at the re-match of one of the more astonishing Grand Slam finals, the Saturday showpiece tie will be televised live on ITV4 from 1pm.
