Home boy Andy Murray suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 defeat to Roger Federer in a tie that lived up to it’s billing on day three. In the jam packed O2 Arena, Murray fashioned a superb first-set, but from there on in his serve deserted him and Federer cranked things up a notch to draw level before charging through a brief third set.

In the earlier tie, Fernando Verdasco produced another fighting performance, but ultimately succumbed to defeat to Juan Martin del Potro in the first tiebreak decider of the tournament. By far the most nail biting encounter of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Verdasco’s chances of progressing to the last four look bleak after the 6-4, 3-6 7-6(1) defeat.

Another tiebreak made the difference in the doubles; Polish pair Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski failed to capitalise on their victory over defending champions Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, succumbing to a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 defeat to 35-year-old Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles, 38.

Defending champions Nestor and Zimonjic fell to fifth seeds Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak 6-3, 6-4, ending hopes of defending their title.
