Day five of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals brought ups, downs and plenty of confusion before Andy Murray eventually departed the tournament at the hands of Juan Martin del Potro.
The 21-year-old pinched the second semi-final spot from under Murray’s nose by recording a 6-2,6-7(5),6-3 victory over World No.1 Roger Federer. Ultimately, a three set del Potro victory was the only outcome that could possibly knock the Scot out of the competition.
It was a day of ranging emotions throughout for Murray, who squandered opportunities to ensure his safe passage to the semi-finals with a straights set victory over Fernando Verdasco, toiling his way to a 6-4, 6-7(4),7-6(3) win instead.
And come the evening, confusion reigned as del Potro remained on court after defeating Federer to await confirmation of his semi-final spot. Murray was as bemused as everyone else, twittering; “Anyone know what’s going on?? I think I’m audi but the rules aren’t worded too well’.
Murray’s fate was finally confirmed after 15 minutes, del Potro advancing by virtue of a 45-43 game win/loss ratio, just one better than Murray at 44-43.
