Mauresmo calls time on 2009 and possibly career

Former world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo is considering her future in tennis after pulling out of the final two scheduled events of her season.

The 30-year-old has not played since she was knocked out in the second round of the US Open by teenager Alexandra Wozniak last month.

And having withdrawn from forthcoming tournaments in Luxembourg and Linz, the Frenchwoman is using the rest of this year to take time away from tennis after losing her motivation for the sport.

“I’ve been trying to practice but I can’t find again the desire to come back to competition”

Mauresmo has endured another injury-plagued season, but did claim her 25th career title – and her first in two years – at the Open GDF Suez in Paris back in February, beating Agnieszka Radwanska, Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva to claim the indoor event crown.

It is now five years since she topped the world rankings, before winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles in 2006.

And while a disappointing first-round exit at Roland Garros was recovered to a degree by a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon, Mauresmo’s early US Open exit has left her looking for a break from the sport.

“Since I came back from the US Open, I’ve been trying to practice but I can’t find again the desire to come back to competition,” the world No.20 told her official website.

And while she went on to say “I don’t want to rush or force things,” she admitted she felt the need for “some time to think before making a decision regarding the remainder of my career.”
