Serena Williams outplayed Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday to win her third singles title at Flushing Meadows and claim the No.1 singles world ranking in the process.

Tennishead US Open Day 14 blog

After all the talk about the women’s game needing a leader, someone who is worthy of the top ranking, we reckon the WTA Tour might have found the right girl.

One French Open.

Two Wimbledons.

Three Australian Opens.

And now three US Opens.

Nine grand slam singles titles. That’s some resume, as the Americans would say.

One thing’s for sure – Serena is a suitable candidate to take over from Ana Ivanovic.

And judging by her comments, she’s ready to rule for some time.

“I feel like I have a new career. I feel so young and I feel so energised to play every week,” she said after Sunday’s final.

“I feel there’s just so much that I can do in my career yet and I’ve never felt like I’ve played my best tennis.”
