Tour diary: Thursday at Eastbourne
The ladies draw has a sense of symmetry about it with an all-French affair in the top half – Virginie Razzano against Marion Bartoli – and the battle of the Wozzas in the bottom half, Caroline Wozniacki against Aleksandra Wozniak.
Razzano delivered the biggest shock when she took out world No.11 and defending champ Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets while Bartoli thumped Anabel Medina Garrigues for the loss of just five games.
Wozniak and Wozniacki also enjoyed easy wins, the former battering Vera Dushevina 6-1, 6-0 and the latter easing past Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-2.
All the talk in the men’s draw was of the injury that forced Ivan Ljubicic to retire midway through his match against fourth seed Fabrice Santoro.
The Croat turned his ankle badly midway through the second set, screaming out in pain and writhing in agony before hobbling off court.
Santoro goes up against Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic in the semis after he beat Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.
In the bottom half Spain’s eighth seed Guillermo Garcia Lopez will face second seed Dmitry Tursunov for a place in Saturday’s final after they beat Janko Tipsarevic and Denis Istomin respectively.
