Sam Querrey will be out for at least six weeks after badly cutting his right arm when he fell through a glass table in Bangkok, effectively ending his season.

The American world No.25 broke the table as he sat on it following a practice session at the Thailand Open and required emergency surgery.

“He was just bending over to tie his shoes and the table shattered,” his agent John Tobias said. “A piece of glass slashed his right forearm.”

“This is an injury that will heal – he was lucky”

Querrey underwent surgery to close the wound but surgeons informed him that no ligaments had been sliced – an injury that could have ended his career.

“He’ll most likely be shut down for the rest of the season,” Tobias added. “But this is an injury that will heal. He was lucky.”

That will be little consolation to Querrey just now. The 21-year-old Californian said on his Twitter feed: “Worst day ever.”

He had enjoyed a good season prior to the accident, winning the US Open Series after picking up the Los Angeles Open title in August and reaching the finals in Rhode Island, Indianapolis and New Haven.

Querrey will be replaced in the singles main draw by compatriot and lucky loser Donald Young. He had also been scheduled to play doubles with fellow American John Isner, but Thomaz Bellucci and Marcos Daniel have taken their place in the draw.
