Wozniacki has time on her side

Caroline Wozniacki is certain to lose her world no.1 ranking when the last ball is struck at the Australian Open, but the Dane told CNN's Pat Cash she knows she can win a Grand Slam

Caroline Wozniacki may have seen her latest Grand Slam challenge come to a premature end, but the Dane was in high spirits during an interview with CNN’s Pat Cash.

Wozniacki’s defeat to Kim Clijsters in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open will see her drop to No.4 in the world, but the former US Open finalist told Cash that having held the No.1 ranking, major honours are her next real target.

“My dream when I was a little girl was to be No.1 and win Grand Slams. I’ve finished No.1 for two years in a row and definitely a Grand Slam would be the next goal,” she said. “I’ve beaten all the players two years in a row and I know I can do it.”

Asked of her priority for the upcoming season, Wozniacki stressed that the main aim was to stay healthy.

“Most important thing, stay injury free," she said. "And Olympics is coming up this year, a medal there would be great and of course a Grand Slam would be nice.”

Wozniacki also said boyfriend Rory McIlroy has had a positive influence on her and that he has even helped to benefit her fitness.

“He is in the gym maybe twice a day every day,” she said of the golfer. “So when I had my off-season, I was like ‘okay no gym, no nothing. I will just relax,’ but he was going to the gym after his golf all the time. I felt bad so he made me go to the gym.

“So he’s been good for me and I hope to have been good for him as well.”
