Gonzo goes Gonzo at Roland Garros
Put yourself in Fernando Gonzalez’s shoes.
You’re two matches from Grand Slam glory, playing an opponent you’ve beaten the last four times you’ve met – and you’re losing. One set away from a heart-breaking defeat.
And then, to cap it all off, the umpire and line judge are conspiring against you, claiming the ball you saw land out clearly landed in.
You feel incensed.
You feel enraged.
You feel…the need to wipe the offending mark away with your (as the French would have it) derriere. And you feel better.
Well, it worked – in the short term. Gonzalez won the fourth set after his little journey south, but it wasn’t enough. Robin Soderling won out in five, 6-3 7-5 5-7 5-7 6-4, to reach his first Grand Slam final.
