Resort review: The Inn at Manitou, Canada
A golf and tennis resort with a renowned wine cellar nestled on the shores of Ontarios beautiful Manitouwabing Lake.
Location: Nestled on the shores of Ontarios beautiful Manitouwabing Lake, 150 miles north of Toronto. This is known as Georgian Bay Country with a coastline home to over 30,000 islands.
Getting there: The Inn itself is in an isolated area, five kilometres from the closest village, ensuring unspoiled, breathtaking views from each of its rooms. It can be reached in just over two hours from Toronto International Airport on a scenic drive north. Comprehensive driving instructions are provided on the Inns website and transfers can be arranged. Flights are available through US Airways, Air Canada and British Airways from a number of airports.
Tennis facilities: First and foremost a tennis resort, the facilities have been much lauded by those in the know since the 70s. There are 11 courts in total four soft clay, six outdoor hard and one indoor hard a fully stocked tennis pro-shop with the latest rackets, shoes and strings, five international tennis pros, and a long history of tennis development.
Coaching: There are many ways to enjoy your tennis at the Inn. Everything from private and semi-private lessons, game matching, Pro-Am doubles, hitting time, hitting sessions and a ball machine are on offer. The best way to play tennis at the Inn, though, is to sign up for a clinic. These are either three or four-day packages with at least four hours each day spent on court. With frame-by-frame video analysis incorporated, youll be sure to leave a better tennis player.
Eating: Due the isolated location and intense coaching sessions, its unlikely youll find yourself spending much time away from the resort. Thats not a problem here, though, as the dining is exemplary. They have an international reputation for fine cuisine with a focus on French cuisine. Bookings are made on a full-board basis and bear in mind that on Friday and Saturday evenings guys are requested to wear jackets to dinner. That ought to give you an idea of the standards of this place!
Drinking: This is a resort for wine-lovers. The Inns world-renowned cellar is stocked with an impressive selection of 4,000 bottles. Weekly tastings are hosted by the French sommelier, so it might be a good idea to get this in early and enjoy the best vintages throughout the rest of your stay.
Sleeping: The rooms are all charmingly appointed and are separate from the main dining and clubhouse with most bordering the sparkling lake.
What else? The Inn is also a golf academy carved out of ten acres of forest. Comprehensive golf instruction is available as an intensive package or as part of a tennis package. With such a big sporting influence its a relief to know that an almost infinite list of body and beauty treatments and massage therapy are on offer daily. Again, these can form part of a tailor-made package so be sure to include at least a sample.
