Portomyrina Palace Hotel
A Greek beach and sports resort run by snow and beach holiday experts Neilson.
Location: Lemnos is a Greek island in the northern part of the Aegean Sea that boasts over 30 sandy beaches. The resort is on the west coast, just a 20-minute walk from the island’s capital Myrina.
Getting there: Charter flights from London’s Gatwick airport take around three-and-a-half hours. The coach transfer is only 30 minutes.
Tennis facilities: There are three artificial courts, two of which are floodlit. Rackets and balls can be hired and there is video analysis available too.
Coaching: Group lessons are included in the price of the holiday and individual sessions can be booked at an additional cost. The two qualified pros provide enthusiastic tuition in the group lessons that take place either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. There’s also organised matchplay, tournaments and a weekly fastest serve competition.
Eating: The main restaurant offers three buffet-style meals a day (providing it’s an ‘inclusive’ evening, as they call it). On non-inclusive evenings there’s a bar snack menu and a beach barbeque. There’s some good Greek wine on offer with the food and while you’re on the island be sure to try the local specialities: feta and melipasto cheese, yoghurt and honey (from thyme-fed bees), said to be some of the best in the world.
Sleeping: There are interconnecting pairs of twin and double rooms for families, which are large enough to take a cot. All come with air-con. There are also five suites combining a bedroom, ensuite bath or shower and a balcony with a lounge area, sofa bed and a second balcony. These suites are suitable for two adults and two children.
What else? There’s a large infinity pool, the Eros Spa, dinghy sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, PADI diving courses, yachting tuition, mountain biking, waterskiing and wakeboarding, fitness classes, sauna, jacuzzi, gym, six children’s clubs and the nearby town of Myrina with its shops, restaurants and imposing Venetian castle.
