Kapalua, Hawaii

Tropical tennis on a 23,000-acre site in the middle of the Hawaiian Islands. Aloha!

Location: The island of Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago of 19 islands and atolls in the North Pacific Ocean. The islands form the US State of Hawaii but are a long way from the west coast of America – said to be the world’s most isolated grouping of islands.

Getting there: It’s a fair old hike to the Hawaiian Islands from the UK, but well worth the effort once you’re there. If you go through San Francisco or Los Angeles, you’re looking at about 11 hours to California, then around another five hours from the west coast of the US to Kahului Airport, 32 miles from the resort. The West Maui Airport is just four miles from the resort and offers daily inter-island flights. There’s a complimentary resort shuttle service available from the West Maui Airport to the resort.

Tennis facilities: Regarded as the best tennis resort on the island, there are 10 tennis courts (all hard) amid tropical gardens and with views of the ocean.

Coaching: Run by a team of professionals from Peter Burwash International. They organise a thorough programme of year-round tournaments, tennis camps, Cardio Tennis and a pro shop. For detailed info try emailing the team at tennisgarden@kapaluamaui.com. We also like the coaching archive on the resort website, written by Clark Corey, the Director of Tennis.

Eating: Everything you could desire at the resort, including gourmet French, Italian, Mediterranean, Pacific Rim, Asian and fresh Hawaii cuisine at ‘ocean view’ restaurants. There are another six restaurants to choose from at the Ritz-Carlton hotel too.

Sleeping: Five-star luxury awaits in either villas, gold villas, three and four-bedroom luxury homes or the Ritz-Carlton hotel, which has recently undergone a $160 million facelift. Villa guests can even pre-order their shopping online ahead of their arrival!

What else? Three is the magic number at this place three white sandy beaches and three championship golf courses. One of the courses (the Plantation Course) hosts a PGA Tour event and there are 15 golf courses in total on Maui Island. Other activities include bike tours, horse riding, eco-tours, fishing, kayaking, snorkelling and whalewatching. Kite surfing is the sport of the moment on Maui.
