Location: Tenerife is one of seven of the Canary Islands, which sit just off the coast of north Africa. The resort is located overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the clifftops of Guía de Isora on the western coast of the island.
Getting there: Fly to Tenerife South, which is around a 25-minute drive from the resort. Tenerife is an easy option for travel from Britain with a number of airlines servicing the destination from 12 UK airports. Flight time is about four-and-a-half hours from the UK.
Tennis facilities: You’ll need to concentrate while on court at this place – the seven Plexipave courts (think US and Australian Open surfaces) all have stunning views over the Atlantic and nearby island of La Gomera so expect lots of shanks. There are also four floodlit short tennis courts and a Centre Court with grandstand capacity for up to 1,200 spectators.
Coaching: A seriously high-quality line up. The programme is run in association with the Academia Sánchez-Casal, the Barcelona-based school where Andy Murray spent some of his youth. The coaching team boasts six former Davis Cup players including Angel Giminez and Emilio Sánchez Vicario, brother of Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. The head pro goes by the name of Inigo and adapts professional training techniques to players of all abilities. The team are happy to find hitting partners for guests and a kids’ club and junior lessons are also on offer.
Eating: We suggest a stay of at least 10 days which will allow you to eat in a different restaurant every night. There’s sushi, fine dining and a cracking seafood restaurant. The El Patio restaurant is run by three-Michelin-starred Head Chef Martin Berasategui. (We doubt whether he’s related to 1994 French Open finalist Alberto, however.)
Drinking: Beer tastes better after tennis, right? It’s a well known fact. Whatever your poison, if you don’t believe us, test our theory at one of five bars the resort offers.
Sleeping: Take your pick – five-star luxury in the 330-room Citadel hotel bang in the centre of the resort, or a more private villa each with its own terrace.
What else? You mean you still need convincing? OK, there’s a lot more than just tennis. Year-round sun, beach club with the usual water sports, wellness and spa centre, kids’ club, a Dave Thomas-designed 18-hole golf course and eight pools. Yes, eight.
