Key Information

Probably the best-known sports resort in Europe. A world-class choice.

  • Address: Los Belones, 30385, Cartagena, Murcia, Spain 30385

Location: The La Manga resort is near Cartagena, close to the city of Murcia in the south east of the country. That means low rainfall and a great year-round tennis climate.

Getting there: Fly to Murcia (20 minutes from the resort) with a host of carriers including Ryanair, Flybe, British Airways, bmibaby and Avro. Guests also come in to Alicante airport which is only an hour away.

Tennis facilities: Prepare to be impressed. La Manga has its own centre with 28 courts (20 clay and eight acrylic and synthetic grass), which has hosted Davis Cup and Fed Cup events in the past. La Manga is also the official winter training base for the Lawn Tennis Association. And it has its own website too…

Coaching: The Head Coach is a Brit, Fraser Wright, who was a Berkshire county player in his day. Wright is supported by an international team of high-quality and very experienced coaches. The tennis programmes are spread across five days, each day focusing on the technique of a different stroke followed by intensive drills. There’s also plenty of social tennis and organised competition. The team also runs standard and ‘pro’ junior academies depending on ability.

Eating: There are two restaurants in the hotel but lots more (Indian, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Uncle Sam’s American Diner and La Bodega for tapas) scattered around the resort.

Drinking: The hotel has its own piano bar or there’s the Tie Break tennis bar where arguments over dodgy linecalls can be settled.

Sleeping: Many of the hotel’s bedrooms have recently undergone an expensive refurbishment and it shows. The rooms have all the modcons you’d expect from five-star accommodation: LCD TVs, power showers and high quality robes and linens. Throughout the resort there are lots of luxurious self-catering options too: check the resort’s own website, www.lamangaclub.com.

What else? As well as world class tennis facilities, there are two championship 18-hole golf courses, as well as football, rugby and dance academies. Pamper yourself at the luxury spa and there’s also sailing and watersports nearby too. Families can take advantage of the junior club, which organises activities for kids from as young as three months to 12 years old in a specially designed and secure centre.
